Master of Science in Professional Science Programs
Actuarial Sciences
Actuarial science is a relatively new concentration designed to train students to apply mathematical skills and statistical techniques to study uncertain future events, especially those of concern to insurance and pension programs. The program offers training so that students can make practical use of probability theory and statistical analysis for managing risks and solving problems. The concentration in Actuarial Sciences offers preparation, basic knowledge, and professional skills to individuals who want to work as an actuary and to pass actuarial professional examinations. Designed for working professionals, the program can be completed on a part-time basis over two years.
Biostatistics
The Biostatistics M.S. offers training in the statistical methods applied to biomedical and health-related fields. These methods involve using mathematics to solve real-world problems that influence health. Some statistical areas of study could include clinical trials, experimental design, categorical and longitudinal data analysis, and survival analysis.
A career in biostatistics is very rewarding and continues to increase in demand. Forbes Magazine listed Biostatistics as the #1 master degree for 2017.
Biotechnology
The Biotechnology M.S. helps prepare students for careers in the management of bioscience firms and organizations. The program is a combination of business and science to offer training to work in leadership roles in scientific companies and agencies. Opportunities with the Biotechnology master’s degree include research science positions in laboratories applying biotechnology to problems in medicine, industry, and agriculture, as well as management positions in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. With the growth of positions in the biotechnology industry in Tennessee and nationwide, the demand for persons with training in both biological science and management is expected to grow significantly. Jobs may be found in agricultural, chemical, environmental and pharmaceutical research and industries. This program consists of advanced science courses, business management courses, and a capstone internship.
Chemistry Analytics
The Chemistry Analytics M.S. helps prepare students to use standard search tools, and retrieval methods to obtain information about a topic, substance, technique, or an issue relating to chemistry, assess relevant studies from the chemical literature, and communicate it orally. Additional skills include: Applying business practices in an industrial setting, being able to adhere to accepted ethical and professional standards in chemistry, and applying chemical practices and theories to proposed problems. Possible career paths include occupations in analytical, physical synthetic, materials, environmental and biological chemistry.
Engineering Management
The Engineering Management M.S. was created to provide engineers, scientists, and technicians with the business and management tools needed for leadership positions in manufacturing and industry. Designed for working professionals, the program can be completed on a part-time basis over two years; classes are held primarily in the evening.
Fermentation Science
The Fermentation Science master’s program at MTSU, a concentration in Professional Science, emphasizes the skills and experience that will prepare the next generation of professionals for the broad range of industries that employ fermentation to create end products, including the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and water treatment industries.
Geosciences
The Geosciences M.S. degree program prepares students from a variety of backgrounds for careers as geoscientists in both the private sector and in government agencies. There is a high demand for well-trained and experienced geoscientists in areas such as geographic information systems and environmental geology. The goal of the Geosciences concentration is to provide each student the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to secure employment as a professional geoscientist, and/or to advance into managerial positions within the profession. Students may elect to complete specializations in either Geographic Information Systems or Environmental Geosystems, or may elect to complete a general Geoscience program of studies.
Health Care Informatics
The Health Care Informatics master’s program at MTSU, a concentration in Professional Science, emphasizes the skills and experience that will prepare the next generation of professionals to be competitive in the business and healthcare information technology workforce. This program is welcoming to traditional students and working professionals. Designed around concentration courses in information systems applications and security, project management, business intelligence/analytics, and healthcare law, this concentration helps equip students to work in public and private business enterprises and academia.
